Samurai – past their prime

European knights, Ottoman Janissaries, or Japanese Samurai? Japan opening up politically and the Samurai losing meaning definitively in the 19th century turned their armour into a sought-after collector’s item. Europe was immensely fascinated by the Samurai’s appearance, by their fighting and armour techniques, and by their history and ‘Code of Honour’, too – as were European museums.
