Supermarket around 1600?
In a wealthy country such as Germany, the continuous availability of fresh fruit from all over the world is now taken for granted. Global trade in foodstuffs already existed around 1600, too, though the means of transport and routes were different. Long-distance trade by ships or over land routes was a dangerous business at the time, and highly risky for traders. The prices of products – which were exclusively the preserve of rich elites from the nobility and upper middle class – were correspondingly high. Thus, a plate with fruit and sweets turns all of a sudden into a luxury object denoting great prestige.
